Dr Tariq Masood is based at EDC and Institute for Manufacturing (IfM), while working with a portfolio of 50+ industrial and academic collaborators, on challenges across design, development and service life cycles of smart products, assets and systems.

Tariq has also worked as a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Associate at the Manufacturing & Materials Department of Cranfield University, while based at Rolls-Royce, Derby. During this KTP, Tariq led the development of next generation global service knowledge backbone to establish feedback to product design, manufacture and engineering services so that operational disruption and maintenance costs are reduced at earlier product lifecycle stages. While based at Rolls-Royce, Tariq collaborated with global Rolls-Royce stakeholders mainly in USA, Canada, Germany and the UK across civil aerospace, defence, energy and marine sectors. He also facilitated a global community of practice on Design for Service within Rolls-Royce and supported other communities of practice on turbines, controls, oil systems and knowledge management. As part of the KTP role, Tariq also supervised demonstrator application development work of a small team of programmers/analysts based at different sites of Rolls-Royce globally.

Tariq has also worked at UK Centre of Excellence in Customised Assembly (CECA) of Loughborough University, where he worked on digital modelling of cooperating hexapod robots for aerospace applications. During his time at Loughborough University, Tariq has collaborated with Ford Motor Company, ACM Bearings Ltd, Bradgate Furniture Ltd, Physik Instumente (PI), Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (and Rolls-Royce Factory of the Future) of Sheffield University and Precision Machining Centre of Nottingham University. Prior to this, he has worked for six years in industrial environments related to advance machining, bi-axially oriented polypropylene film (BOPP) production and maintenance.

Tariq has also been involved in supervising, examination and marking of PhD, masters and undergraduate students at Cambridge. Prior to this, Tariq also had a few years experience of University level teaching and supervision in advance machining, computer aided design/manufacturing, production planning and control, quality management systems and graphical communication.

Selected Committee Work

For over a decade, Tariq has been involved in scientific committee work of various international conferences mainly organised by: IEEE – the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers, USA; IMechE – the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, UK; IASTED – the International Association of Science and Technology for Development, Canada; ASME – The American Society of Mechanical Engineers; CIRP – the International Academy for Production Engineering (or the College International pour la Recherche en Productique), and the United Nations. Tariq has also delivered keynote speeches and chaired technical sessions during international conferences.

Tariq is an editorial board member of Journal of Engineering and Applied Sciences. He is a reviewer of the International Journal of Computer Intergrated Manufacturing, Proceedings of the IMechE  Part B: Journal of Engineering Manufacture and a number of other journals and conferences. He is also a member of the IMechE, the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC).

Tariq has also been the founding chair of the University-wide Departmental Postdoc Committee Chairs' Network since 2014, which represents 4,000+ postdoctoral research staff of Cambridge. As part of this role, Tariq has organised a number of network meetings involving departmental postdoc committee chairs and senior University leaders e.g. PVCs and heads of various services. He is a member of the University Postdoctoral Matters Committee (PMC) - a joint committee of the University Council and the General Board. He has also written invited papers to senior University Committees e.g. PMC, HR Committee, Researcher Development Committee (RDC) and Office of Postdoctoral Affairs' Management Committee (now Postodctoral Advisory Committee) on strategic issues related to postdocs. Tariq has also served as an invited member of the RDC. In 2015, Tariq was one of the invited three-member panel of senior University leaders who were interviewed by the European Commission and Vitae as a result of which the University of Cambridge retained its HR Excellence in Research Award.
