Aim - To provide teams designing complex products and services with effective, properly integrated methodical computer support for the whole design process, not just the later stages where traditional CAD excels.
For over twenty years at Cambridge University and previously at Lancaster, I have researched and implemented software tools to aid teams in problem understanding, generation, selection and development of solutions. For the past decade I have continuously collaborated with and been partly supported by the Design Systems Engineering Group of Rolls-Royce plc. In recent years this collaboration has extended to the Design Engineering Group at Imperial College, London. The results of my research are embodied in the proprietary Rolls-Royce Decision Rationale Editor (DRed) which has become an important part of the company's engineering tool-set, and Imperial's free and open source designVUE tool.
