Biography

  • Ph.D. in Engineering Design (University of Cambridge, 2011)

Dr Anna Mieczakowski is an Industrial Fellow at the Engineering Design Centre at the University of Cambridge, specialising in inclusive design and particularly in 'cognitive engineering'. Her work focuses on aiding organisations of all types in the design of products and services that align with users’ understanding in order to make them more accessible and usable. She has extensive experience of working with international public and private organisations from various sectors, including information and communication technologies, healthcare, food, education and manufacturing.

She has led and managed numerous large international projects investigating people’s use of modern technology and media across the varied abilities of a diverse population. Her work has been published in public reports and articles in international journals, books and conferences, as well as being disseminated in design exhibitions for both public and business benefit. Anna also advises the UK government and leading commercial organisations on responsible, people-focused design within the University of Cambridge’s Centre for Science and Policy, and is a proud member of Pembroke College, Cambridge.

Previously, she worked in the software industry.

Recently, she has been leading a number of collaborative knowledge transfer projects between the Engineering Design Centre and industry and government. Some of the major outputs of this collaboration include:

  • The "Conversations, Conferencing and Collaboration: An Investigation of Factors Influencing the Effectiveness of Distributed Meetings" project, which she led and project managed in four countries (UK, US, Australia and China) in 2013.
  • author of the "Inclusive Design: Better for People, Profit and Planet!" article in Technology Strategy Board's Design Special Interest Group.
  • the host of the "Design that makes a difference" exhibition in Cambridge, showcasing 20 people-centred projects from the UK and Norway that put people first, meet social need, influence business practice and effect positive change.
  • the editor of the "Ageing, Adaption and Accessibility: Time for the Inclusive Revolution!" book, which contains 21 thought pieces on the topics of ageing, people’s adaption to the ever changing world of technology and insights into better ways of designing digital devices and services for the older population. The book was officially launched into the public domain on the 25th of January 2013, at BT Tower in London, in the presence of eminent representatives from government, industry and academia;
  • the "Designing Our Tomorrow: 10 Principles for the Development of Inclusive Design Practice" booklet, which she co-created in 2012 based on a thorough, long-term audit of the industry's inclusive design practice;
  • the "Culture, Communication and Change: An Investigation of the Use and Impact of Modern Media and Technology in Our Lives" project, which she led and project managed in four countries (UK, US, Australia and China) in 2011. The results of this project were officially launched into the public domain on the 5th of July 2011, at The Design Council and subsequently at BT Tower in London, in the presence of eminent representatives from industry, academia and the press.

Anna's research interests are in the general area of engineering design, particularly the development of design methodologies and tools in inclusive design and healthcare design to evaluate designs against the needs and capabilities of the target user groups in order to achieve successful, accessible, usable, safe and sustainable products and services.
