Biography

  • Ph.D. in Engineering Design (University of Cambridge, 2011)

Dr Anna Mieczakowski is an Industrial Fellow at the Cambridge Engineering Design Centre, specialising in inclusive design's 'cognitive engineering' strand concerned with design of products and services that align with the understanding of people from different generations and of different abilities in order to make them more accessible, usable, desirable, safe and sustainable. She also focuses on unravelling the intricacies of users’ socio-psychological factors in adoption and sustained usage of interventions in healthcare and telecommunications.

Over the years, Anna has led many large international projects investigating people’s use of modern technology and media across the varied abilities of a diverse population, and has worked on numerous User Experience (UX), new nanomaterial and other product developments spanning a wide range of sectors, including consumer products, healthcare, education, F1 racing, automotive, aerospace, energy, construction. Her work has been published in public reports and articles in international journals, books and conferences, as well as being disseminated in design exhibitions for both public and business benefit. Anna is also a Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, as well as a Member of Cambridge Centre for Science and Policy and Pembroke College.

In addition to her Industrial Fellow role, Anna is currently leading the operations and business development functions in a young company specialising in the production of a new wonder material - graphene, where the application of inclusive design principles is a key differentiator in the development of the next generation of customer and industrial products and services.

Some of the major outputs of Anna's work in collaboration with industry and government include:

  • "Conversations, Conferencing and Collaboration: An Investigation of Factors Influencing the Effectiveness of Distributed Meetings" project, which resulted in 3 public reports, including the UK report, the US report and the Asia-Pacific report.
  • "Inclusive Design: Better for People, Profit and Planet!" article in Technology Strategy Board's Design Special Interest Group.
  • "Design that makes a difference" exhibition host in Cambridge, showcasing 20 people-centred projects from the UK and Norway that put people first, meet social need, influence business practice and effect positive change.
  • "Ageing, Adaption and Accessibility: Time for the Inclusive Revolution!" book, which contains 21 thought pieces on the topics of ageing, people’s adaption to the ever changing world of technology and insights into better ways of designing digital devices and services for the older population. The book was officially launched into the public domain on the 25th of January 2013, at BT Tower in London, in the presence of eminent representatives from government, industry and academia;
  • "Designing Our Tomorrow: 10 Principles for the Development of Inclusive Design Practice" booklet, which she co-created in 2012 based on a thorough, long-term audit of the industry's inclusive design practice;
  • "Culture, Communication and Change: An Investigation of the Use and Impact of Modern Media and Technology in Our Lives" project conducted in four countries (UK, US, Australia and China), which resulted in 3 public reports, including the Book of Thought Pieces, the Detailed Report and the Summary Report. The results of this project were officially launched into the public domain on the 5th of July 2011, at The Design Council and subsequently at BT Tower in London, in the presence of eminent representatives from industry, academia and the press.
