Dr Nicholas Caldwell MBCS, CITP, CEng

Dr Nicholas Caldwell is a Research Associate in the Engineering Design Centre at the University of Cambridge. His doctoral research involved the application of artificial intelligence techniques to the problems of fault diagnosis and optimal performance of scanning electron microscopes, using onboard expert systems and web-based remote control packages. In engineering design research, he developed the WebCADET system, a web-based decision support system for new product development based on the "AI as text" paradigm, in collaboration with Napier University and the University of Middlesex. In e-learning, he has led projects to create and evaluate multimedia course material for undergraduate teaching and microscopy simulation. Prior to joining the KIM project, he was a developer for the Online Tutor project, an initiative funded by the Cambridge-MIT Institute to support the teaching of programming languages via computing practicals. He is a Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society, a Member of the British Computer Society and a Chartered Engineer.
