Ken Wallace was appointed Lecturer in Engineering Design at the University of Cambridge in 1978, Director of the Engineering Design Centre in 1990, Deputy Head of Department in 1997 and Co-Director of the BAE SYSTEMS/Rolls-Royce University Technology Patnership for Design in 1998. He was responsible for coordinating the proposal to SERC (now EPSRC) to establish an Engineering Design Centre at Cambridge.
In 1967 he obtained his BSc in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST). He then completed his 1-3-1 apprenticeship with the Aero-Engine Division of Rolls-Royce and worked in the Stress Office, the Preliminary Design Office and the RB 211 Development Office before leaving to help form a small engineering company.
In 1991 he was elected a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and in 1994 a Fellow of the Smallpeice Trust and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering Designers. He was the first member of staff from the University's School of Technology to win a Cambridge Foundation Teaching Prize, awarded for excellence in teaching. From 1990 to 1996 he was Editor-in-Chief (Europe) of the journal Research in Engineering Design. He edited the 2nd English edition of the standard text Engineering Design - A Systematic Approach by Pahl & Beitz, published by Springer in 1996.
