Dr Julie Jupp BSc, BA, PhD

Dr Julie Jupp joined the Engineering Design Centre as a Research Associate on the EPSRC Innovative Manufacturing Grand Challenge Programme. Her research looks to understand how decisions are made and can be supported across the life cycle of the project in different domains, sub-domains and across different design contexts. Her research contributions focus on how to help a variety of people to make decisions across all stages of the design and services processes.
Julie's previous research at the Key Centre for Design Computing and Cognition (KCDC) has concentrated on the fields of automated design-code checking, life cycle modelling, knowledge development, decision-making, virtual environments, and for the last 4 years in the study of visuo-spatial reasoning. Her research has included the development of innovative software tools to aid designers. In recent years, as a member of the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) for Construction Innovation, she has worked with the Commonwealth Scientific Research Organisation (CSIRO) in developing, implementing and introducing into industry two design support systems: - DesignCheck, an automated code checking system, and - AIMM, a tool to assist in decision making during a building’s life cycle.
As part of her PhD thesis, Julie also developed Q-SOM - a tool to support visuo-spatial reasoning during the conceptual stages of designing. The system enables the generation and evaluation of design solutions, by reasoning about a design’s physical similarity to existing ones. Her thesis addresses the affect of different types of visuo-spatial attributes, their salience and their relevance under different design contexts. She was motivated by a neglect of multi-ontological spatial schemas for qualitative re-representation as well as the lack of context dependent assessments in feature-based classification systems.
