The purpose of the “EPSRC Grand Challenge” doctoral research undergoing is to investigate the optimal incentive structure throughout the product life cycle in boundary crossing relationships. In order to achieve optimal efficiency and effectiveness in product-service systems, it is crucial to align inter-organisational incentives. A specific focus will be drawn on public private partnerships (PPP) especially the highly promoted model of the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) which embraces long-life cycle, product-service system projects. The PPP label covers a wide range of different types of partnerships, where the private sector partner takes on responsibility for providing the public sector services. Long-life cycles of up to 30 years are common in the PPP which is often characterised by a mismatch between project life-cycle and the incentive framework. His research will be embedded in Work Package 3 Task 1 of the “Grand Challenge” – Immortal Information and Through-life Knowledge Management.
