Jan-Bertram is a Research Fellow working on several projects with Professor Will Hughes at the School of Construction Management and Engineering, University of Reading. He studied Law at the Universities of Cologne (Germany) and Lausanne (Switzerland) and obtained employment as an assistant teacher for undergraduate law students at the School of Law, University of Cologne. Between 2000 and 2002 he undertook his traineeship in judicial service at the Appellate Court Duesseldorf when he worked for Judge Dr Wiese, Wuppertal, and for Lawyer Dr Reufels from Heuking Kuehn Luer Wojtek, Cologne. He qualified as a German lawyer in 2002.

Jan-Bertram is finishing his PhD thesis on comparative construction law, supervised by Professor Mansel, University of Cologne. Its title is "The liability for building defects under German and English contract law." To fulfil the English part of the study, he spent a year at the University of Reading in 2003 where he worked alongside Professor Will Hughes and Professor John Murdoch (School of Law).
