IPAS - Integrated Products and Services

The IPAS project aims to integrate product and service design as well as the operation of existing products and services. Its major aspects are to feed back information from service into the design of new products, to model and support processes of product and service development, which have to go hand in hand, and to provide appropriate computer support for the designers including life cycle cost models.

The IPAS project is motivated by the fact that companies are increasingly becoming service providers instead of mere manufacturers, as customers devolve the operational risk of the product to the manufacturer. Nevertheless, the focus is not on developing pure services but to take service issues in the meaning of maintenance into account in the design process; something which can be called "design for service".

The IPAS project is funded by the DTI and is conducted by various research institutes within the UK and in close cooperation with Rolls-Royce plc.
