Metallic foams (metfoams) are a new class of material, unfamiliar to the engineer. They are made possible by a range of novel processing techniques, many still under development. At present metal foams are inadequately characterised, and the process understanding and control are incomplete, resulting in variable properties. But even the present generation of metfoams suggests alluring potential, and process control and characterisation are improving rapidly. Metfoams have potential in light stiff structures for efficient absorption of energy, for thermal management and perhaps for acoustic control and other, more specialised applications. They hold, too, the promise for market penetration and applications where several of these functions can be combined.
